DOC receives 3 prestigious ACS grants

We are pleased to share that the Division of Organic Chemistry has been awarded three prestigious grants in 2024, which set the stage for more engaging and impactful programs in 2025.

The DOC received the Local Section Member Engagement and EnhancemenT (MEET) grant for “Brewing = Chemistry: The Science of Beer.” This initiative, in collaboration with North Jersey and TrentonLocal Sections, will host a member outreach and engagement event in September 2024 at The College of New Jersey. The interactive event will teach the audience how four simple ingredients, barley, water, hops, and yeast come together through fermentation and other chemical reactions to make a wide variety of beers.

More recently, we have been awarded the ACS Divisional Activities Committee (DAC) Innovative Project Grant (IPG) for our “Pharma Scholars Program.” This cross-divisional collaborative initiative with ACS Divisions of Analytical Chemistry and Professional Relations, brings together industry professionals, students, post-docs, and key constituents in achieving the ACS’ mission of advancing the broader chemistry enterprise and its practitioners. Our proposed mentorship program will strengthen the community and help younger chemists grow through cross- disciplinary synergies.

In addition, DAC has approved our request for funding through the IPG Grants for Divisional Enhancement for the proposal entitled “Increasing Student Engagement through a Collaborative Event of DOC, MEDI, and YCC.” This proposal increases engagement of undergraduate and graduate students, as well as post-docs in ACS Divisions through a symposium, panel and networking event that highlights how members of these Divisions have transitioned from their studies in academia to thriving in industry.

We look forward to implementing these creative, practical proposals. These grants represent opportunities to continue the DOC’s mission to foster the growth and promote the advancement of the field of organic chemistry.
