Organic Division Web Site Update
The Divisions' web site has been significantly revised in November. Enhancements include separate pages for each of the awards provided by the division, direct links to online organic journals, more sites linked on the links page, and many others additions. Please feel free to send comments on the usability and other enhancements to the web master,
Brian Myers
or
Jim Rigby, Secretary-Treasurer.
Also, a password protected page has been added for the Executive Committee members that includes descriptions of duties and helpful hints for future committee members of the division are provided. To access the secure page, visit the link at the bottom of the listing of the Executive Committee Members web page.
Job postings on the Divisions' web site
Over the past several months, several academic researchers and position seekers have found the Organic Divisions' online employment opportunities listing page quite useful. Typically, ads are posted on our web site within 48 hours of receipt. Best of all the service is free to members posting ads and of course those people looking for positions. We are also happy to list government and corporate position openings. Contact
Jim Rigby
with additional position announcements. The DOC employment page is located at:
http://www.organicdivision.org/employment.html
Percy Julian Biography
On behalf of the ACS membership and with support from the Division of Organic Chemistry, the ACS Board of Directors recently contributed financial support in the amount of ($102,000) to NOVA/WGBH for completion of Phase 2 of the Percy Julian Biography. Percy Julian was a synthetic organic chemist who was the first to synthesize a number of important antibiotics. The production should air on the PBS series, NOVA in late 2004 or early 2005.
Web site for Organic Syntheses is available
Organic Syntheses presents to the organic chemistry community detailed experimental methods in a standard format for the synthesis of organic compounds. The 79 annual volumes and 9 collective volumes published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. are now available online. The site requires specific browser configurations and the ChemDraw Browser plugin. You can access the database at:
http://www.orgsyn.org/
.
Annual Volumes of Organic Syntheses
Organic Syntheses, Vol. 79 is currently in press and will be delivered as soon as possible. If you do not receive your copy or receive a damaged copy you can request another copy of the book through the Office of the Secretary-Treasurer. Submission of Papers for ACS Meetings

Call for Papers for Upcoming Meetings:
The 225th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society
Date/Location:
March 23-27, 2003 in New Orleans, LA.
Abstracts Due Online:
November 8, 2002.
Submit abstracts using the Online Abstract Submittal System (OASYS) at
http://oasys.acs.org/. Include required 1,000 word description of oral or poster presentation (Div. Bylaw IX.1b) in online submission via OASYS. If you do not have web access, contact program chair before November 1, 2001. Deadline: Online submittals by November 8, 2002.
Clarification of Guidelines for Long Abstract Submission:
Over the past couple of years, we have noted some recurring problems and questions with online abstract submission. Unfortunately, word processing and PDF files cannot be accepted for submission because of issues in dealing with hundreds of articles for each meeting. Therefore, the Organic Division suggests that you limit your long abstract to 1000 words and include a limited number of figures and equations. The inclusion of a few paragraphs to state the problem and results, a general or key experimental procedure, characterization of key materials, and leading references will normally suffice. Hopefully, these general guidelines will facilitate the abstract submission process for all involved. More information on preparing your abstract for rapid upload to OASYS is available on the Organic Divisions' Author Information Web Page:
http://www.organicdivision.org/author_info.html.
ACS Requirements:
The bylaws of the American Chemical Society places the following requirements on papers that are presented at National ACS Meetings. At least
one author
of each paper must be a member of the American Chemical Society, unless all the authors are not chemists or engineers residing in the United States.
Organic Division Requirements and Policies:
The Organic Division has the following bylaw and policies pertaining to ORAL and POSTER PRESENTATIONS submitted for presentation at National ACS Meetings.
-
Under no circumstances should a paper appear in print in a journal other than as a communication to the editor before presentation. Responsibility for ensuring that this policy is not violated rests solely with the author(s). If a manuscript is accepted for publication before a Meeting, the author(s) should specifically request the editor to arrange publication in an issue that is circulated after the ACS Meetings.
-
Submit abstracts using the Online Abstract Submission System (OASYS), at
http://www.acs.org/meetings/. Include required 1,000 word description of oral or poster presentation (Div. Bylaw VIII.1b) in online submission via OASYS. If you do not have web access, contact the Program Chair well before the deadline.
What to Look for in the Fall News Letter:
Fall Elections
Ballot for the election of various officers will be included with the fall newsletter mailing.
Book Discount Coupons
The Division will no longer be sending out a hard copy
spring
newsletter via US Mail. Therefore, the book discount coupons that were normally sent with the spring newsletter will be sent out with the fall newsletter.
We appreciate your patience in this matter.
